Tips for Selecting Dog Shock Collars

The dog shock collars have been around for about 30 years now. They have since changed and become a better instrument for training your dog. When the collars first came out they were seen by dog lovers as an inhumane way of dog training. But now with education, people are beginning to change their minds about the shock collar. Today they call the shock collar a remote collar. Many dog trainers use this method in their training curriculum.

How They Work

Dog shock collars are designed to train the dog to stop unwanted behavior. The owner or dog trainer controls the transmitter, the collar is the receiver. Each time that the dog exhibits the negative behavior the owner or trainer then hits the button and the dog feels a short low energy shock in the neck area. Given time, the dog learns to stop the unwanted behavior. Dog shock collars can enhance positive behaviors in your dog.

Different Types of Dog Shock Collars

There are currently two types of dog shock collars. They are the citronella collar and the electric dog collar. Both are used in the same way.

The electric dog collars, otherwise known as static collars are used when the dog is off the leash. The collar gives the dog a low voltage shock that is not painful but it does get the attention of the dog. The citronella collar shoots out a short spray of the citronella fragrance into the dog’s muzzle. The spray irritates the dog more than anything. In time he learns to do what the owner or trainer wants him to do.

Dog Shock Collar Features

Before you purchase a dog shock collar make sure that the features of the collar match up to your dog. For instance, if you are training your dog to be within 60 feet of you then purchase a collar that allows you to be 60 feet from your dog.

Momentary or continuous stimulation. Momentary shock collars will give the dog very short shocks. Continuous stimulation gives the dog continuous shocks until the trainer lets go of the button. Some shock collars have a pre-set button that gives stops the shocks for 10 or 15 seconds giving the dog time to rest.

The range of dog shock collars allow the dog to go between 150 up to 300 yards away. Choose the range that is right for your dog.

The shock intensity is determined by the trainer. You know the dog best and you know how much he can take. If this is a timid dog the intensity level should be kept very low. For larger, head strong dogs you may choose a medium or high level.

Just in case the dog decides to go into your pool or jump in the lake it is best if you choose the waterproof collar. This protects the collar and your investment.

The dog shock collars are designed with adjustable settings. When you first purchase the collar you may have to test it on your dog the make your adjustments.

Using the dog shock collars can be a great way to train your dog while continuing to praise the dog during the training sessions.
